Diploma theses
Every year a number of students carry out their diploma thesis within the group, usually on one of the live research or industrial problems of the laboratory.
Typical thesis subjects
- Thermohydrodynamic or TEHD analysis of a thrust or journal bearing (CFD).
- Experimental study of a lubricated contact on the tribometer or a test bed.
- Elastic shaft alignment of a real vessel, including hull deformations.
- Development of optimization software for machine-element design.
- Condition monitoring and machine learning from vibration and acoustic data.
- Piston-ring lubrication models for two-stroke marine diesel engines.

Join the group
For students of the School who are choosing a diploma thesis, and for graduates interested in doctoral research.
Diploma theses. Projects are usually defined around a running research programme or an industrial question, and often combine simulation with measurement on one of the laboratory’s rigs. Some theses have led directly to journal publications and to awards.
Doctoral research. Current themes include the simulation of rough and textured lubricated contacts, machine-learning based bearing diagnostics, and intelligent monitoring of ship shafting systems. Doctoral candidates take part in the group’s funded projects and in onboard measurement campaigns.
